Large diameter valves include all sizes above 24” nominal pipe size and the sizes 24”, 26”, 30”, 36”, 42”, 48”, 54”, 60”, 66”, and 72”. These valves are normally equipped with remote operators or gear operators, such as Bettis air cylinders, Limitorique electric actuators, Ramcon rotary hydraulic actuators, manual worm gear, or bevel gear operators. The accepted industry standard for pressure testing is API-598. Valves of large diameters are typically limited to pressure class 75, 125, 150, 300, 600, and 900.
For design reasons, flow characteristics of ball valves, butterfly valves, knife gate valves, wafer check valves, tilt disc valves, and single flapper check valves comprise the available valve types. Services for these valves range from high-pressure steams to gravity fed bulk applications for power plants or AWWA waterworks applications. Body and trim materials for large diameter valves include ASTM A126 cast iron, ASTM A216 WCB cast steel, ASTM A217 WC6 alloy steel, ASTM A352 grade LCC low temperature steel, ASTM B148 Alloy 952 aluminum bronze, and ASTM A217 grade WC9 alloy steel.
